Author: lady_leia_solo
Story: The Mondian Chronicles (Archive/Index/Timelines)
Title: His Duty
Challenge: Chocolate 11: confusion
Topping(s) and Extra(s): Raspberries (Featured Article for February 27, 2013)
Word Count: 361
Summary: You're far too frivolous, much like your mother.
Rating and Warning(s): G
Note(s): Luc is the elder child of Henri I and Marie Everart. He was born in 1114 AW. He's about twenty in this as it takes place in 1134. Luc's stepfather is Lord Betrand Fitzbois who also happens to be Henri's half brother through their father. Betrand eloped with Luc's mother in 1120 which caused a scandal and they were briefly bared from court by Henri to appease his wife, Anna, Marie's younger sister. Yeah the family trees are convoluted XD

“Good afternoon, Father.”

Henri nodded at his son, Luc Fitzbois. The boy resembled him greatly, even more so than his legitimate son, Prince Henri.

“Have a seat, Luc.”

Luc settled into a seat across from his father’s desk. The two men stared into each other’s eyes.

“I was surprised when you summoned me here,” Luc said.

“You shouldn’t have been. As a child of royal lineage, your duty is to the crown.”

“Yes, I suppose,” Luc said uncertainly.

“I need you for something,” Henri said.

Luc sat up straighter in his chair.

“As I’m sure you’re aware, Monde and Alesha have declared war upon each other,” Henri started.

“Yes, I’ve heard of that from Lord Bertrand.”

Henri paused at the mention of his brother. He quickly recovered.

“I’m sending you to Estogne. You’ll be my eyes there.”

Luc’s eyes widened. “You’re sending me to the Menchian Wall?”

“Yes.”

“But Father I have no experience in the military. Why would you send me?”

“You need to learn, Luc. You’ve been far too frivolous, much like your mother,” Henri said.

Luc bit back the retort he had on his tongue. His father didn’t know anything about Luc’s mother. She wasn’t the same woman he had known and taken as his lover some twenty two years ago.

“Couldn’t I be of use here?”

Henri sighed.

“I think you’ll do well there.”

Luc slumped in his chair.

“You’ll be meeting with Lord Savireaux. He’s married to the Lady Claudine.”

“The Queen’s sister?”

“Yes,” Henri said.

Luc stared at his father, waiting for him to say more. But Henri was silent.

“Is that all or…?”

“Say hello to your sister for me.”

He was dismissed. Luc stood and bowed deeply to his father. He glanced at him, but Henri was now looking at his papers. Who else’s life was he going to ruin?

Luc let himself of the king’s study. He walked down the corridor, his hands clutched at his side. He would have to tell his mother of this news. That is if she hadn’t heard from her husband, Betrand, already and of course his sisters. He grimaced. That wouldn’t be easy. Not one bit.

It's hard to tell if Henri is giving Luc a chance to prove himself or simply getting him out of the way for a while. He certainly doesn't seem comfortable with the boy's likeness to him. Hopefully it works out well for Luc :)
