Title: Big, Scary Stranger
Summary: At one point in her life, Olive was scared of Mars.
A/N: I love doing Vanilla Custards way too much for my own good. But here you go, another one! First half of this piece takes place on the very first time Olive saw Mars. The second half--well, "fluff" is the word to describe it.

They were at a good distance away from the blazing wreck of what used to be their car. Bethany cradled Olive, brushing her hair back while trying not to break down herself. Olive's eyes darted every which way, hastily taking in all that was happening. For someone who was barely four years old, it was all too much to take in: they were huddled up at roadside while watching their car go to ruin in a blaze of orange and red.

And then there was the man who saved them both.

He stood beside them, tall and strapping, an imposing sight to see. He had tanned skin, though looked a tad lighter in the sunlight. His face was in the shape of a rounded cube; it sat upon a bulky rectangle of a torso. His dark red hair was completely unkempt; Bethany would disapprove of such untidiness. He had a stubble that made him look all the more gruff and unkempt. He wore a pair of faded blue jeans and a dirty white tank top.

Olive found him scary. She didn't understand what had just happened, let alone the fact that this big, scary stranger just saved her and her mother's lives--all she knew was this man looked incredibly scary.

So much so that when he turned to smile at her, she recoiled back and drew her arms in, curling herself up in her mother's arms. Of course, Mars wouldn't understand why she'd be scared of him. Not that he thought he looked scary to a little girl.

"...What are you doing still up at this time?"

Mars sat up in his bed, his head still heavy with sleepiness. He looked to his right and saw Olive crawling closer to him. She looked grim with distraught; her eyes narrow almond shapes and soaked with tears.

"I can't sleep," she whimpered. "There's something in the closet."

Mars squinted at the far side of the room; the closet had been open the whole time. What looked like ugly distorted shadows were really some of Olive's dresses--not scary at all, but entirely cute when she wore it.

As soon as Mars shut the closet and returned to his own bed (which he pushed right next to Olive's, at her request), Olive threw herself at him, clinging on to him by his neck.

"You'll be here with me, won't you?" she whispered. Mars looked at her and gently combed his fingers through her shoulder-length hair.

"Of course," he said. Olive felt a deep rumble in Mars' chest; she pressed her ear onto him to hear the steady thumping in his chest.

"Don't worry," he whispered before wrapping an arm around her. "I've always been there. I've fought for you before; I'll keep fighting for you."

Olive knew that to be true. This was the same person she had been scared of the first time they saw each other. Now, though, what was there left to be scared of?

MARS I LOVE YOU. Well, I never met a planet I didn't love, and which one is my favourite seems to depend on who you've been writing lately, but I think it's Mars right now. And I want to hug him. He's the perfect guy for a bit of fluff.
