Jav? Jav Dawes?”

His stomach sank at the sound of the voice. Bludger. Gamn. He stopped in his tracks but did not turn around. “You must be mistaking me for someone else.”

Oh, that's ye all right! I'd reckonize that voice anywhere, dressed up 'r otherwise. Javert Sebastien Dawes.” The old man chuckled. “S'pose ye prefer the fancy name now. Now that ye're all dressed up in yer fine cop dunnage. Like a regular Blue Bottle!”

I'd advise you to shut up right about now, Mr. Turpin.”

Puttin' on airs, are you?” Bludger hollered in a mockery of the officer's accent. “Or just afraid to look like ye know me better than anyone else on yer little Lobster force?”

Shut up.” Javert gritted his teeth. “And clear out. That's an order.”

Oh, Little Jav.” The man let out a laugh and moved forward, breathing his foul breath on the back of his former companion's neck. Hatred oozed from his words. “What are ye gonna do, arrest me? I'll slip out of those devil's claws quicker than ye can wink. Even if ye already know my tricks.”

The inspector's muscles tensed. “You're not good enough to be arrested, Turpin. If you don't clear out in the next thirty seconds, I'll bludgeon you to death with your own club. And that goes for the lot of you!” he added, glaring imperiously at the rest of the scum who had gathered around the alleyway.

They turned and fled faster than he had expected, knowing full well that his ferocity was no act. Bludger was the last to go, muttering to himself all the way. “What 'n upside-down world this is, when yer little partners become Lobsters.” The man locked eyes with Javert and did not waver until he had disappeared into the darkness completely.

Most of the lowlife in this gutter won't see past your uniform, Dawes,” the captain had assured him. "Nothin' to worry yourself about, all right?"

Javert turned and left, trying desperately not to feel like the traitor he was.

Hi, welcome back :)

Interesting start to this arc. I get the feeling Jav's captain doesn't know quite as much as he'd like to think he does. Looking forward to see where this goes :)
