Lyssa's arrival, a few days before the wedding. I don't think I have any better friends in my canon than the sisters. Thank you dictionary.com for giving me an easy fotd on the day I needed it! One point for my team.

A loud knock rang out through Ski’s quarters.

“Coming,” she called, but the door was already opening.

Mara was at her heels as she crossed the sitting room, and then she was ahead of her, barreling towards the open door.

“Mother!”

Lyssa, who had barely stepped into the room, dropped her bags and scooped the girl up in a tight hug. Feet dangling above the floor and arms around Lyssa’s neck, Mara was beaming.

“I didn’t know you would make it,” said Ski.

“Was short notice,” Lyssa said. She was at least as dusty and ragged as ever, and Ski wondered what it was she had to drop to come racing back to the palace. “But of course I made it. Think I’d stand you up?”

“I was more uncertain if the message would reach you in time. I never know where you are.”

Lyssa gently lowered Mara to the floor and pulled Ski into an embrace. “Never too far for you,” she said.

She was nearly as smelly as she was filthy, but Ski held her tightly anyway. “Apparently it was quite far from running water, though,” she said and they both laughed.

“Don’t worry,” said Lyssa, as she and Ski drew apart. “I’ll head for the baths just as soon as you’ll let me. Now,” she continued, squaring her hands on her hips. “What is this nonsense about you getting married?”

Ski grimaced. Mara jumped between them, completely missing her reaction in her own eagerness to explain. “Oh, Mother! Aunt Kari is marrying a prince! She’s going to be a princess! A real princess!”

Ski bit her lip as she watched Lyssa forcefully swallow a laugh. “Is she now?” Lyssa said, rather stiffly.

“Yes.” Ski laid her hands over Mara’s shoulders in what she hoped was a calming fashion. “Dalton and I have become quite…close these past months.”

Lyssa did snicker at that. Ski shot her a glare. Mara didn’t notice; she was already headed for Ski’s room, with Lyssa’s hand in tow.

“Mother, you have to come see the dress!”

Lyssa allowed herself to be led across the room. She turned to Ski as they passed. “So, who is standing in for Mother in this?”

Ski bit her lip again. “I had hoped that you would.”

Lyssa came to a halt. Mara kept tugging.

“You did it last time.”

“Yeah,” said Lyssa, slowly, giving the back of her neck a scratch. “If it’s really what you want.”

“I hardly wish to have Elly do it.”

Lyssa wrinkled her nose at that. Then she looked at her outstretched arm and the exasperated child clinging to the end of it, beckoning her into the next room, and shook her head and smiled.

“Course I’ll do it.”

Ski let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Lyssa.”

“What are sisters for?” Lyssa clapped her on the back as she followed Mara into the bedroom. “Maybe you’ll pay me back when it’s my turn.”

Just before the doorway, Ski jerked to a stop. “Your…turn?”

Lyssa didn’t grace that with a response. “Let’s go see that dress,” she said instead.

“But…”

“Oh, look, it’s blue,” Lyssa declared loudly. “Who would have guessed?” Mara dissolved into giggles.

“You just said-”

“Damn, that’s a lot of ribbons!”

Ski gave up with a heavy sigh and stepped into the room.

I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with mom. Ski and Mara have been back at court for over a year now. Either things have deteriorated for her or she's dead, I never quite decided what was wrong with her in the first place.
