Lyssa woke to pounding on the door.

Beside her, Kairn still snored. Over a decade on the run and yet the man could sleep through anything. Lyssa sighed as she peeled his hand from her breast and slid out from under his arm.

She eyed the pile of discarded clothing on the floor as she thrust her legs from under the covers and over the edge of the bed. She had just located her cloak, one long red sleeve protruding from the edge of the heap, when another round of pounding sounded from across the room.

“Coming,” Lyssa yelled, as she bent to retrieve the cloak.

There was a sleepy “Hmm?” from the bed behind her.

“It’s nothing,” she said, adding as she shrugged into the cloak, “I hope.” Given the lack of response, he wasn’t awake enough to hear her anyway.

Lyssa gave the clothes still on the floor a kick that unearthed a belt strung with knives. This she scooped up and slung over her shoulder.

Ignoring that her choice of wardrobe did little in the way of preserving her modesty, Lyssa strode to the door and swung it open, lodging herself in the opening as she did so.

A pair of men stood on the other side, local militia by the unfamiliar badges affixed to their randomly assembled armor, one with his hand raised, poised to knock again. He quickly dropped his arm to his side, and both men shuffled back a step as their eyes drifted uneasily over the swath of skin left bare at Lyssa’s sternum by her open cloak and the row of sheathed blades strung casually across it.

Lyssa followed their gaze and grinned as she lounged against the door. “Can I help you two?”

“Are you Lyssa Burnoire?” said the first one, stiffly.

“Yeah, what of it?”

“Your presence is requested at the palace by order of the king.” Lyssa guessed it was the first occasion the man had ever had to use such a phrase.

“I was just there yesterday. He couldn’t talk to me then?” There was a warm bed across the room with a warmer body in it, both of which she was sorely missing, and she wasn’t sure where to direct her anger, at the pair in front of her or whichever of Harmon’s lackeys had seen fit to send them to harass her. At any rate, the temperature of the room was beginning to climb.

“My Lady,” said the second soldier, solemnly. King’s orders or not, he was clearly more accustomed to being called to the inn to deal with unruly mercenaries. Aside from the initial look, he’d paid her arsenal and the bosom it was draped across no further notice. “After you left, Lord Nesrin was found murdered. You are wanted for questioning.” At this his hand fell to the hilt of the sword at his hip.

The threat carried no weight with Lyssa, but the words had her attention. As she fumbled for a reply, a groggy, disheveled, and shirtless Kairn came up behind her. “This is your idea of keeping a low profile?”

Lyssa sniffed. “As if I actually had anything to do with it.”

Kairn’s look darkened further. “That’s not what-”

“Who is this?” the guard demanded, his hand still on his weapon as he looked from Lyssa to Kairn and back.

As Kairn edged forward, Lyssa braced her arm against the door, blocking his way, and faced the soldiers. “Nothing. A diversion,” she amended with a grin, which earned her a scowl from one of the men and more uncomfortable shifting from the other. “So, a trip to the palace, then? Though, perhaps it would be best if I were to put some clothes on first? Not exactly dressed for court. Or for riding for that matter.”

“Er, yes,” said the nervous soldier. “Of course.”

“Don’t get any ideas about escaping,” said the other. “We have this inn surrounded.”

Lyssa flicked the pair a dismissive wave as she shut the door. “Wouldn’t dream of it!”

Kairn scurried after her as she strode back to the bed. “You’re going try to escape, aren’t you?” he hissed, shooting a nervous glance back at the door. “Tell me you’ve got a plan. What are you going to do, go out the window?” His eyes darted to the narrow frame and back.

“Ah,” said Lyssa, casually picking through the remainder of the pile of clothing, “but they said they’ve got the place surrounded.”

“And when have ten or even twenty guards ever made much of a difference to you?” He paused, regarding her suspiciously for a moment. “You’re not going to burn the place down, are you?”

Already half out of her cloak, Lyssa stopped to gape at him. “Gods no. I like this place.” She slipped the rest of the way out of her cloak. “Kinda hard to stay here again if I torch it.”

“What, then?”

“Simple.” She pulled on a shirt. “I’m going to the palace.”

“B-but-”

“What? Think I’ve never been questioned before?” She ignored the way he flinched at that, reaching for her pants instead. “This guy was after you and Sham once too in case you forgot. I’d like to know what happened to him.”

“Lyssa…”

“Look, you’ve got what you wanted now.” Fully dressed, she started strapping weapons in place. “Take Sham and get the hell out of here before anyone wants to question him too.”

“You know that’s not what I meant at all.” He caught her by the arm as she passed him.

Lyssa laid her own hand over his with a sigh. “Just keep him safe.”

“Don’t worry about us. You keep yourself safe.” He pulled her close for a kiss. “I love you.”

“Love you too.” They lingered there, neither wanting to let the other go. “I’ll be fine,” she said at last. “Promise.”

She squeezed his hand and headed for the door.

Okay so, I did laugh at "a diversion." And how Kairn just lets that one go.

This is a great use of the prompt. I love how Kairn can't believe she's NOT going to try something crazy. I wonder what she'll be able to learn by going along with it—the questioning could make for a good scene, right? ;)

thanks :)

I'm sure Kairn knows she doesn't mean it. And when does Lyssa ever not want to torch the place? (Sham's not going to buy it either)

I still have no idea what to do with her at the palace, but hopefully I can pull something off.

As great as the rest of this was, one bit I liked a lot was Lyssa just wanting to go back to bed and how healthy her relationship with Kairn seemed in this. Because I know it's mean but I'm always surprised when Lyssa's relationships are healthy.

hahaha I'll take that last bit as a compliment because I always consider her pretty dysfunctional myself ;)

thanks! :)
